NCNW Metropolitan Sun of Arizona annual Living Legends Honored community trailblazers Ms. Ruby James and Rev. Terry L. Harris at the Pyle Adult Center in Tempe on May 23, 2026. The event’s theme “On Solid Rock We Stand” reflects the lasting foundation these leaders have created through their commitment to education, faith, mentorship and community service.

Ruby James’ service has always been rooted in education. She is an Arizona native born in Casa Grande. Raised in Eloy, Ruby dedicated her career to helping students succeed and ensuring schools are places where people could thrive. She began her career as a classroom teacher and later in administration serving as assistant principal, principal and eventually superintendent within the Eloy Elementary School District. Ruby became the district’s first female and African American superintendent opening doors for future generations. Throughout her career, Ruby has championed educational excellence while remaining deeply involved in community organizations and civic initiatives. Even in retirement, Ruby continues her commitment to service to the community. NCNW Metropolitan Sun of Aizona is honored to present Ms. Ruby James as a 2026 NCNW Metropolitan Sun of Arizona Living Legend.

Rev. Terry Harris pastor of New Hope Baptist Church in Casa Grande is a Living Legend. Rev. Harris’ leadership has been expressed through a life devoted to faith and service. Rev. Harris answered the call to ministry early in his life and spent decades serving congregations throughout Arizona. He has guided families through life’s greatest joys and deepest challenges while helping to strengthen the spiritual fabric of our communities for over 40 years. His service extends beyond the pulpit. Throughout his ministry Rev. Harris has supported community programs, encouraged youth development and worked to create opportunities for connection and growth for those he serves. Friends and colleagues have described him as a compassionate person who can bring people together. This has earned him the respect of generations of community members.
