Arizona Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Meet with Secretary of State Adrian Fontes to Advance Voting Rights

On February 12, 2026, the Arizona Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. visited the Arizona State Capitol to meet with Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes to discuss Alpha’s enduring commitment to voting rights and the protection of free and fair elections.

As part of the discussion, Secretary Fontes expressed his agreement and alignment with Alpha Phi Alpha’s civic mission and shared an overview of his current legislative effort, the Voters First Act, which he introduced on January 20, 2026. The conversation reinforced a shared belief that strengthening election systems, expanding access, and safeguarding the integrity of the vote are essential to a healthy democracy.

“Civic engagement is not a seasonal responsibility—it is a year-round commitment,” said Bro. Roy M. Tatem, Jr., Chairman, Commission on Political and Civic Engagement, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. “When we show up, learn the issues, and build relationships with public officials, we help ensure our communities are informed, represented, and empowered. Our presence at the Capitol is a reminder that democracy works best when the people participate.”

Alpha Phi Alpha’s national program, A Voteless People is a Hopeless People, continues to serve as a guiding framework for voter registration, voter education, and advocacy—especially in communities that have historically been underrepresented or underserved. The Arizona Brothers’ visit reflects the Fraternity’s broader commitment to advancing policies and partnerships that protect the right to vote and strengthen public trust in elections.

Call to action

Alpha Phi Alpha districts and members of the National Pan Hellenic Council across the country are encouraged to follow Arizona’s example: visit your State Capitol, meet with your Secretary of State and legislative leaders, and engage in meaningful dialogue about voting rights and election integrity. By building constructive relationships and staying informed on proposed legislation, we can continue to lead with purpose and ensure that every eligible voter has a clear path to the ballot box.
