Freshman King Mauni Harris Emerging Among the Valley’s New Stars
In a season that’s redefining Camelback High School football, one name has quickly risen to the forefront—freshman standout King Mauni Harris. At just 14 years old, the Class of 2029 athlete has made an immediate impact for the Spartans, anchoring the defense with poise and precision well beyond his age. In his varsity debut season, Harris recorded 49 tackles and 1 interception, ranking among Arizona’s top freshman defenders and earning recognition as one of the state’s breakout defensive stars. His emergence is symbolic of Camelback’s resurgence, as the program continues its upward climb under head coach Dante Foster.
Originally from Houston, Texas, Harris has called Phoenix home for the past four years and wasted no time making his mark. Standing 5-foot-8 and weighing 133 pounds, he plays both wide receiver and safety—a rare two-way talent in today’s high school game. Recently clocked at 21.3 miles per hour by @FiyrPod and Pro Elite Speed Coach Jake Benger, Harris ranks among the top 1–3% of players his age nationwide. His blend of acceleration, awareness, and discipline has drawn comparisons to college star Travis Hunter for his ability to dominate on both sides of the ball. “King represents everything we’re building here—discipline, focus, and heart,” said Coach Foster. “He’s mature beyond his years and a key part of what makes this program special.”
That maturity has translated into big performances on the field. On October 24th, Harris forced his first-ever fumble and added six total tackles as Camelback defeated North 33–14, extending their winning streak to four games. Earlier in the season, he delivered a standout performance against Canyon View, notching 10 tackles and two pass deflections. Each week, Harris continues to prove why he’s not only one of the top freshmen in Arizona, but also one of the most complete young defenders in the region. His physical ability, football IQ, and leadership make him a cornerstone for a Camelback team that won its region title for the first time in 22 years last season—a milestone Coach Foster attributes to a renewed culture of “accountability, toughness, and love.”
Off the field, Harris brings that same drive to everything he does. A scholar-athlete with a 3.4 GPA, he’s been recognized by Tempe city leaders, Congressman Greg Stanton, and even honored at Chase Field for his work as a youth role model. His mother, Dr. Velma Trayham, a nationally recognized business leader, credits King’s success to discipline and humility. “We’ve taught him that kindness, discipline, and character open more doors than talent alone,” she said. With Division I aspirations and programs like LSU, Arizona State, and Georgia State already on his radar, Harris remains grounded. “Playing both sides of the ball pushes me to be better,” he said. “I want to be excellent in everything I do.” With his talent, mindset, and maturity, King Mauni Harris isn’t just a player to watch—he’s quickly becoming one of Arizona’s rising stars.
