Maryvale Ends 20-Year Drought, Captures First Region Title Since 2005

For the first time in two decades, the Maryvale Panthers are back on top of their region. Behind a balanced offensive attack and a swarming defense, Maryvale defeated Carl Hayden 49–18 on Thursday night to clinch the 4A Copper Sky region title — the program’s first since 2005. The win also marks the Panthers’ first winning season since 2010.

Led by sophomore quarterback Messan Alokpovi (pictured), who accounted for four total touchdowns, the Panthers (record not specified) wasted little time setting the tone. On their opening drive, Alokpovi capped a quick march with a five-yard touchdown run. Fellow sophomore Isaac Buchanan followed with a 26-yard scoring run late in the first quarter to make it 14–0. Maryvale extended its lead midway through the second quarter when junior Miles Woods caught a five-yard shovel pass for a touchdown. Carl Hayden (record not specified) responded with two touchdown passes from senior quarterback Damiani Mitchell (pictured) — a 24-yard strike to Elijah Evans and a 17-yard connection to Darcell Parker — trimming the deficit to 22–12. The Panthers answered quickly before halftime. Buchanan broke free for a 44-yard run to the 8-yard line, setting up Alokpovi’s second rushing touchdown from two yards out. Maryvale led 29–12 at the break.

In the third quarter, Alokpovi connected with his brother Julien Alokpovi (pictured) for a 27-yard touchdown pass that stretched the lead to 36–12. Later in the quarter, freshman Alijah Cross delivered the play of the game — a 94-yard fumble return for a touchdown that put the game out of reach. Maryvale and Carl Hayden traded late scores, but the outcome was never in doubt. The Panthers’ 49–18 victory capped a statement performance for a team rebuilding under the direction of Marcus and Mark Carter, brothers and Maryvale alumni who returned to help restore pride in the program. Messan Alokpovi finished with four total touchdowns, while his brother Julien added 97 receiving yards and two scores. Buchanan led the ground attack with several key runs, including two that set up scores. Despite the loss, Mitchell turned in a strong performance for Carl Hayden, accounting for 329 yards of total offense and two touchdown passes. He also contributed a sack and a fumble recovery on defense.

With the region title secured, Maryvale’s resurgence under the Carter brothers marks a new chapter for a once-proud program — and a sign that the Panthers may finally be on their way back to playoff contention.
