“Waking Up to Our Roots”

By Farmer Miller MSCN, MSROA – Alchemy Farms

Have you noticed fewer bees in your garden? Or maybe the summer air doesn’t hum with insects the way it used to. You’re not imagining it. All around us, the ecosystems we depend on are declining—quietly, steadily. What scientists call “ecological collapse” isn’t something far off or abstract. It’s here, and it’s showing up in everyday ways: in the food we eat, the air we breathe, the soil beneath our feet.

At the heart of this decline is a broken relationship with the land, with the food on our plates, and with the hands that grow it.

We’ve gotten used to food being instant, cheap, and disconnected from season or place. But convenience comes at a cost. Industrial farming practices—driven by profit, not nourishment—strip our soils, pollute our water, and push pollinators toward extinction. Every empty field and every processed package in the grocery store is a symptom of something deeper: we’ve forgotten that food is life, not just fuel.

At Alchemy Farms, we believe it’s time to wake up. Not in fear, but in remembrance.

Farming is one of the most ancient relationships humans have with the Earth. When done in harmony with nature, it builds soil, restores habitats, and feeds communities in body and spirit. Regenerative agriculture isn’t just a method—it’s a mindset. One that asks us to slow down, pay attention, and get our hands in the soil.

The good news? Healing is possible. It starts with simple choices: knowing your farmer, eating what’s in season, growing a tomato on your porch, or just asking, “Where did this come from?”

This column is your invitation to come back to your roots. To remember that the food we eat isn’t separate from the Earth—it is the Earth. And by rebuilding our relationship with food, we can begin to repair the web of life that sustains us all.
